I Love Fashion!

It might be said that fashion designers are "innovative," or "visionary." But I prefer to refer to these demiurgic dervishes as "wacky," "cuckoo," "nutty," and "insane." I always have a good time going through the aftermath of the various fashion weeks, slogging through the hundreds of photos at New York Magazine's fashion section, my favorite, and possibly the best, online source for what's new and exciting in the world of fashion. The next few posts here will feature my favorite findings.

First up, young British designer, Gareth Pugh. Can't tell he's really a costume designer now, can you?

This little number reminded me of something that might go over well in a Harry Potter movie. Some half-crow, half-human that Hagrid might fancy as a pet, perhaps.


Here's a nice piece for the forthcoming Clan of the Cave Bear meets Mad Max flick. (In Hollywood these days, anything is possible.)

Paris Fall 2010 Fashion Week - Gareth Pugh

Gareth Pugh's Fall 2010 collection could almost pass for mainstream, if mainstream means heavy leather for women and a sort of Jedi Master/priest look for men. But I'm a fan of Mr Pugh, and I think it all works. And isn't that last look just calling out for Tilda Swinton?

Spring 2010 RTW - Gareth Pugh

I am endlessly fascinated with British designer Gareth Pugh, whose clothing designs are primarily for aliens or for earthlings from a post-apocalyptic future and occasionally mind-boggling in their weirdness. He's also designed a fragrance, which is not nearly so odd, and which I like a great deal.

His Spring 2010 collection is maybe not as far out as in past seasons, but it has its moments.

See? Rather calm, nothing bizarre.

Why does the song "Car Wash" pop into my head when I look at this ensemble for men?

I'm not sure if the shrug-like jacket is part of the whole, or a separate piece.

Chicken-Woman from Space in artfully vented pants.

It's kinda hard to see any of this as "ready-to-wear."

Ohh...I know Mr Minx is going to put himself on the waiting list for this little number!

More vents. I kinda like this and would wear it if I were skinny. And weird.

This is perhaps the most ordinary piece in the whole collection. Somewhat Dr Seuss, but wearable.

I think the hat is a great way to go incognito. Lindsay, Britney, and the rest should really look into it.

Paris Fall '09 Fashion Week - Gareth Pugh

Gareth Pugh's Fall 2009 Ready-to-wear collection is far more wearable than his last two. Considering how avant garde/spacey/sci fi they were, it's not really saying much.

But don't you think this is heading right up Tilda Swinton's alley?

Spring 09 Fashion Week - Gareth Pugh

Brit designer Gareth Pugh is a real nutjob visionary and I look forward to his collections every season. This, his first Paris collection, is part Star Wars storm trooper, part Queen Elizabeth I.

It's not completely unwearable, just mostly. But the hooded robe/coat has potential, as does the flouncy dress.

I have not seen the collection in person or in motion, but apparently they are white on the front and black on the back, representing the notion of emerging from darkness.

London Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Gareth Pugh

Avant garde designer never fails to thrill with his fashion vision. This season, his inspiration seems to be some sort of alien/zombie hybrid.

The first armor-like dress (very Marilyn Manson, I think) is constructed of zippers, which also seems to be the trim on the extremely wide-shouldered cape. The last look is a sweater dress embellished with hundreds of safety pins. The off-center collar looks like it once accommodated a second head.


More pins border the first coat, which actually seems quite wearable. Not the oversized oven-mitt mittens though. The second coat is quite spectacular.


Want to smell like a goat, or just look like one? Pugh used lots of goat hair in this collection. Not sure if that's a skirt or culottes on the guy (looking like a cross between a winged monkey and the Tin Woodsman). The hairy shoulders on the gal's outfit makes me think of a bad gorilla costume. And an Italian I dated once.


These python-trimmed outfits aren't quite as outlandish, but I'll bet it all squeaks and creaks rubbing together while walking.
