From what I can tell, the whole blogosphere is up in arms over Gretchen Jones' win on the Project Runway finale last night, and I can't understand why. From the first episode, Gretchen showed that she was a versatile designer who understood fabric and made clothing that women could and would wear. Sure, she grew fatigued somewhere around week 10, but I had no doubt that she had this competition in the bag.
Mondo may have been the crowd favorite - in our eyes, his metamorphosis took him from oddball lonely boy to confident winner. And while his clothing was fun, joyful, when I saw photos of his finale show I thought of the complaint heard in other seasons: he had designed clothes, not fashion. His mixing of patterns was masterful, but like season 3's Uli Herzner, they may have seemed a bit of a crutch. Tim Gunn should not have advised him to leave that all-black dress out of his collection.
Andy South was my pick from episode one. Unfortunately, he pulled a Santino and showed a collection that, while beautiful, was largely safe and lacking a lot of the edgy side of Andy we saw during the competition.
So what did you think about the finale? Are you also pissed that Gretchen won?

Project Runway Finale Tonight!
Tonight we find out which of three finalists - Andy South, Mondo Guerra, and Gretchen Jones - emerges victorious. (If you want a sneak peek at their finale collections, you can find them linked here.)
While I've been a fan of Andy's from the first episode, I do love me some Mondo. And I must say I would not be too upset if Gretchen wins. I know she has a lot of haters, but honestly, she reminds me of me.
Who do you want to win? Who do you think will win?

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 RTW - Zac Posen
Considering that most of Zac's models look like they're planning to run around town in their unmentionables, there are some really gorgeous looks in this collection. I'm particularly fond of the two black/white ombre gowns.

Fragrance Review Flashback - Stoned
Sometimes the hype is more interesting than the scent. "The scent is a heady mix of a sweet candy fused with the mystery of patchouli." And, apparently, it's "the most fun one can have being stoned without breaking the law." I saw your ears perk up. What's this, you ask? Why,Stoned, created by Miller Harris nose Lynn Harris for London jewelery designer Solange Azagury-Partridge. Solange's jewelry designs are all over the place, going from fairly traditional diamond designs to the frankly wacky and fantastical. Her perfume, on the other hand, is heavy, somewhat cloyingly sweet, and a bit boring.
There's an opening battle between uber-sweet vanilla and a very dry leather. Who wins? Neither. The sweetness makes my teeth hurt while the dusty and cracked quality of leather badly in need of conditioning nearly makes me sneeze. While they continue to duke it out for main note, powdery rose and heliotrope make an appearance, tell a few jokes, and then slink away again.
After several hours, however, my opinion of this fragrance changes as it develops into a gorgeous ambery scent, rich, warm, and intoxicating. I'd buy the drydown. For $65. The whole thing for $285? Are you kidding? So it's got diamond dust in it. Bah. So do some saw blades. And personally, I think the red glass bottle, studded with pustules, is tres ugly.
Stick to jewelry, Solange.
Notes: Italian bergamot, rose, jasmine absolute, labdanum, benzoin, tree moss, heliotrope, musk, vanilla bourbon

Fragrance Review Flashback - Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanilla
Notes: vanilla, spices, benzoin, frankincense, cedar, pink pepper, bergamot, Bulgarian rose, ylang ylang
I’m a vanilla girl. Not personality-wise -- there I would be more pistachio. What I mean is that I love vanilla scents. The rich, overtly-vanilla ones, decadent and gourmand, as well as oriental or floral fragrances that have a warm vanillaic base. My husband likes them too, which makes me more inclined to wear them. So imagine my dismay when he proclaimed, after sniffing a ribbon spritzed with Guerlain’s new vanilla-based fragrance, Spiritueuse Double Vanille, “it smells like Play-Doh.” I had been looking forward to experiencing this new perfume more than any other during the Sniffapalooza Fall Ball. I snatched the ribbon from his hand, for I had let him smell it first, and had my turn. It didn’t smell of much at all. I was crestfallen. But somewhere at the back of my mind, I was relieved that I would not be forking over $200 to the fabulous Guerlain rep.Wanting to give it another shot, on skin, I raced out of Bergdorf’s cramped café straight to the Guerlain counter. Miraculously, I was the first to arrive, proclaiming, somewhat breathlessly, “I need to smell the Vanilla.” I was promptly spritzed. I closed my eyes, sniffed deeply, and my wallet instantly felt lighter. I waved my arm in front of my husband, who spent an uncharacteristically long time inhaling the fragrance. “Mmmm, spicy. I like it.”
Play-Doh was nowhere to be smelled. I would suggest foregoing the ribbon tester for a strip of paper, or, better yet, some nice warm skin. Although vanilla is there from the start, cedar is the most prominent opening note, woody and aromatic. It is tinged with the subtly sharp spice of pink peppercorns and a whiff of other sweeter spice notes. As the scent dries down, the vanilla becomes more pronounced, rich and deep, but somehow gentle. As the vanilla takes center stage, a rich, resiny incense forms the backdrop. The rose is barely perceptible, and the ylang doesn’t speak to me at all. All of the notes combined create a fragrance that is somewhat reminiscent of tobacco. It’s honeyed, but not overly sweet. Eventually, the vanilla takes over almost completely, with tiny traces of the incense and cedar in the depths.
I told the nice Guerlain reps that I would have to think about investing in the fragrance and would probably be back. Fifteen minutes later, my husband was toting that little rectangular shopping bag….

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 RTW - John Galliano
For his Spring 2011 muse, John Galliano chose Marie Lani, a con artist who convinced members of the Paris art scene (Matisse, diChirico) to paint her portrait and then absconded with them. The looks were each meant to be a portrait of Lani.
Pretty.
