Happy Memorial Day!

Whether driving to the shore or firing up your grill, please give a thought to the valiant young men and women who have given their lives over the years to keep America free.

Scent of the Day 5.28.10

Today I'm wearing Parfums de Nicolai Fig Tea Eau Fraiche, a blend of sweet fig and osmanthus. It's almost too sweet at first, but settles down nicely into a figgy tea scent as the day progresses. I thought it was a perfect cheerful scent for this slightly chilly and gray Spring morning.

Have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day Weekend!

Summer By Bravo

Ok, do you think all of the really Bravolebrities get together and party like this without flipping tables and verbal abuse?

Father's Day, Nautica Style

With Father’s Day just around the corner (ok, it's June 20th, but that will be here before you know it!), Nautica has launched a contest on Facebook that gives one lucky father the opportunity to win a $3,500 photo shoot and $1,500 Nautica shopping spree. All you need to do is upload your favorite father-daughter or father-son photo. Each entrant also receives 10% off a Nautica.com purchase. Wives can do it for their husbands, daughters for their dads, etc. Any dad you know is eligible for entry.

That Facebook contest has one winner, but here at Opalescent, we have THREE. I have three $100 Nautica gift cards to giveaway to three lucky winners.

Here's how you can be a winner: on the Nautica Web site, there's a page listing potential Father's Day gifts. Choose an item you would buy and in the comments section of this post, tell me for whom you would buy it. For instance, I'd buy the slim fit polo in that gorgeous "aquashell" color for my husband, because it would match with his eyes (and in case you're wondering, my husband is a wonderful doggie daddy). And for my Dad, I'd get the silk-cotton twill shirt in yellow because I know he secretly loves a pop of color, even if he does always seem to wear khaki and navy.

Interested? Then start commenting! Please note that entrants must be 18 or older and located in the US or Canada only. I will be putting all entries in a hat and drawing three names at random. Please leave a valid e-mail address so I may contact you if you are a winner.

Contest ends June 14th.

The prize was provided by Nautica, but Nautica is not a sponsor, administrator, or involved in any other way with this giveaway. All opinions expressed in the post are my own and not those of Nautica.

"Reverse Retouching"

Not only is Photoshop used to make inches disappear, not to mention cellulite and blemishes, it is also used to make anorexic or other overly-thin women look bigger. Check out this article from the Mail Online.

amfAR's Cinema Against AIDS 2010

Must be a hard life for these celebs to have to go all the way to Antibes to attend a charity function. They have my pity.

I love Rachel Bilson's fresh-faced low-makeup look, but am not sure about the fireworks on her boobies.  Diane Kruger's dress makes her look like a linebacker. A really gay linebacker.

I think Elizabeth Banks looks like some really fancy theater curtains. And why, if she's a spokesmodel for L'Oreal hair color, does she have such ugly and obvious roots? Emily Blunt looks va va voom, plain and simple.

What the hell happened to Ivana Trump's face? She looks like she should be auditioning to play an evil Disney queen in that outfit. Why is Kirsten Dunst always wearing something so matronly?

Jennifer Lopez looks predictably like, well, Jennifer Lopez, in something pale and frothy. Maybe a little too Barbie for the 40-year-old. Mary J. Blige is still working that shit-pot haircut! She looks like a Chucky doll.

Michelle Rodiguez looks pretty in pink, but I hate her shoes. And Mischa Barton appears to be showing off a new set of boobs? I really love her dress, but not her bleach blonde locks.

Patrick McDonald Seeks Products

Although I didn't think he was the most talented designer on Launch My Line, I did love his personality. This is a press release I received this week:

NYC, NY 5/19/10. Fashion Icon, Celebrity Patrick McDonald is entering the licensing arena. Seeking product lines related to fashion is a natural for this Beau Brummell. He is a perennial front row favorite at New York Fashion week, so much so that he appeared front row in the movie Sex in the City during the fashion show scene. He is a feast for the paparazzi often photographed by Bill Cunningham of The New York Times and countless books and fashion chronicles. He recently competed in Bravo TV's Launch my Line where he was one of last designer contestants to leave.

He is the epitome of Dandyism, "A piquant sumptuousness in attire, a preoccupation with effect, an elegant admission of vanity, distinctly reminiscent to the French court.--Giving meticulous attention to dress."

John Peale Bishop, The Golden Age of the Dandy (1920) -- Vanity Fair (The Viking Press, Inc.) (1960)

Licensing rights for Patrick McDonald - The Dandy will be available through the offices of LA PRESSE PR 1 Penn Plaza 36 Floor New York City, New York 10119.

Cannes 2010

I usually enjoy looking at photos of the goings-on at the Cannes Film Festival every year because the stars in attendance usually dress to the nines for simple movie premieres. Extreme, but classy. But I'm not seeing so much class this year, particularly in the outrageous outfits of model Velvet D'Amour (left) and Julie Atlas Muz (right). Tacky tacky tacky.

Jennifer Hudson at Cannes

There was good reason for Jennifer Hudson to be overweight - her head is huge. Now that she's all svelte, it's really noticeable.

Nautica Swimwear

Summer is on its way, and that means swimsuit season!

One of the looks thats sure to be popular this summer is the tunic, as seen on Blake Lively (of course she'd look good in a potato sack). Nautica has this great French Terry Pullover Hoodie that will look great at the pool or beach, even if you're not a Gossip Girl. I think it's really cute, and I'd wear it, even though you won't catch me dead or alive in a swimsuit. Tankinis are cute too, if you don't like a one piece but still don't want to show too much.

Nautica just so happens to be having a 25% sale, ending today!  Head on over to the Nautica swim section to check out their entire swimsuit collection.

MiN NY

Remember that I mentioned the Linari line in a previous post about the new MiN NY apothecary? Here's more info on the line. MiN now has exclusive rights to sell the line in North America, so if you want it, need it, have to have it....

MIN NEW YORK WINS CONTRACT FOR LINARI FINE FRAGRANCES FOR NORTH AMERICA.

In the past seven years LINARI has become one of Germanyʼs most sought after luxury houses of scent. Known for itʼs exquisite home fragrances in glass and wood, Linariʼs diffusers, room sprays, and candles are architectural and beautiful in hotels and homes. Previously never made available in the USA, Linariʼs coveted collection of eau de parfums - Angelo di Fiume, Notte Bianca, Eleganza Luminosa, Vista Sul Mare and Aqua Santa - are now available at MiN New York.

Renowned perfumers Mark Buxton [Comme des Garçons, Karl Lagerfeld, etc.], and Egon Oelkers [Biehl Parfumkunstwerke, H&R Fragrance Guide], and Maurice Roucel [Envy for Gucci, Le Labo, Bond No. 9, etc.] created the LINARI scents.

LINARIʼs eau de parfum range comes in 100-ml bottles [$195.00]. The heavy French glass bottles resemble classic inkwells, each are topped with a flat round cap of African wenge wood. The cap also serves as a stand for the bottle.

LINARI Diffusers [$110.00] are created with milled internal thread from solid maple, wenge, zebra and multiplex birch woods. The natural quality of the wood ensures every closure is unique. The bottle design remains flawless to match any space.

LINARI room sprays offer an ideal way to create an immediate and reliably scented atmosphere. The purist 100ml bottles are manufactured from the finest Italian glass. Room sprays start at $47.00.

LINARI candles are hand poured in France by one of the most famous candle producers known. Using the highest quality wax available allows almost immediate fragrance diffusion. Candles are priced from $60.00.

LINARI creates just the right atmosphere in any private living area, it is also ideal for public spaces and enjoys prime placement within top class hotel lobbies, bars, and restaurants around the world. Linari is a perfect gift for the hostess or client.

Formerly distributed by Lafco, MiN New York now serves as the new exclusive distributor for North America as of January of 2010. MiN New Yorkʼs flagship Atelier at 117 Crosby Street in New York City serves as the primary showroom for the entire collection.

"Linari represents the finest in room scents and their recent creations in premium fragrances are superbly executed. Our partnership is a great alignment of values." Chad Murawczyk, CEO.

Barbie for the Home

When I was a little girl, I was definitely a Barbie girl. My favorite gifts were always Barbie dolls, Barbie accessories, Barbie clothes, etc. I had Malibu Barbie, PJ, Skipper, and Ken; Live Action On Stage Barbie in her groovy fringed jumpsuit; and Talking Julia, among countless others. When I was 10 or so, Mom and I went to a huge flea market held at Towson State University and found a treasure trove of 60s-vintage Barbies, clothing, and cases. I even scored a Ponytail Barbie, although I think she's #6 and not all that valuable.

I've sold most of my Barbie collection, apart from the Ponytail, a Midge, and a Ken from the early 60s. I simply have no room in my house for doll collections, but every once in a while one catches my eye. Like the Cyndi Lauper Barbie. And these amazing accessories from the new Barbie PLASTIC line, which went on sale 5/4:
Reinvention of the Philippe Starck's Louis Ghost chair, $650

Jonathan Adler “1959 Barbie Mirror” Hand-created for Barbie’s “Real” Malibu Dream House: $8,800 (WANT!)

“Fancy Footwear” Barbie Shoes Ring by Margaux Lange: $235

And for the man who has everything, a French-designed “Objet D’Art” Barbie Foosball Table: $25,000

You can buy any of these at http://barbiecollector.com/plastic or by calling 1-800-491-7514. And don't forget I want that mirror....

The 2010 Met Ball

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Ball is always a fun event for those of us who like to see what the celebrities are wearing. Normally there are at least a few freaks and geeks in attendance, like Madonna and Mary Kate Olsen last year.

This year, there was a preponderance of "meh" - ladies looked uniformly pretty, many wore pale colors - blush, apricot, white.

Anne Hathaway (Valentino) and Taylor Swift (in Ralph Lauren Collection) looked - lovely and boring.

Sarah Jessica Parker (in Halston Heritage) and Kate Hudson (in Stella McCartney) looked - lovely and boring.

Marion Cotillard (in Christian Dior) and Jennifer Lopez (in Zuhair Murad) looked - lovely and boring, although JLo's skirt had some snazz.

Diane Kruger and Diane Lane (in Michael Kors) both went for more plain looks, although Kruger's Calvin Klein is stunning in its simplicity.

Maggie Gyllenhaal wore what looked to be denim (Louis Vuitton). Eva Mendes wore her grandmother's sofa slipcover (Dolce & Gabbana).

Christina Hendricks looks to be wearing Donald Trump's toupee on the shoulder of her L'Wren Scott gown. And I think Rosario Dawson slaughtered Big Bird's sister for the occasion (Giambattista Valli).

Mary J. Blige looks too sweet in her frou-frou J. Mendel apricot gown. And I believe that hair style is what we used to call a "shit-pot haircut" when I was a kid. I'm torn on Renee Zellweger's Carolina Herrera gown, but I love her short hair.

Someone didn't tell Tina Fey or Carey Mulligan that this was a rather formal event. A jumpsuit? (even if it is YSL) My grandmother's apron? (Miu Miu) Come on!

Voyage d'Hermes

Voyage d'Hermes is the latest scent by Jean-Claude Ellena. It seems to me that he's been working a theme and has finally gotten it right. It takes the bright citrus aspect of Un Jardin Sur le Nil, the cedar of Terre d'Hermes, and the leather of Kelly Caleche, and combines them in a way that I like very much.

The citrus, with juniper berry and possibly cardamom, is initially akin to a mildly skanky grapefruit note. Underneath, one can sense the woods and a note that reminds me very much of a soft leather. I didn't like Kelly Caleche as much as my review of it would suggest. The more often I wore it, the less I liked it and eventually felt the leather + flowers just didn't work for me. But leather + citrus + cedar = perfect. And the drydown, although it retains some of the sharpness of the opening, has a nice soft musky quality that I love.

Reading other bloggers thoughts of Voyage makes me wonder if we've been smelling the same fragrance. No worries - plenty of room in this world for multiple opinions. But am I the only one who gets that Ellena has started doing a variation of the same fragrance over and over again? Not that it's a bad thing, and he does occasionally mix it up with something like Apres la Mousson, but I wonder when this particular obsession will subside.

Sample obtained at Sniffapalooza.
